Chefchaouen holds a secret past as a hidden fortress village. Steeped in history, it wasn’t until the 20th century that Europeans were allowed to visit! Spend your first afternoon getting to know this enchanting town, its winding streets painted in calming shades of blue and white. Breathe in the fresh mountain air and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. In the evening, we’ll rest comfortably in a local hotel.

Day 2: Exploring Chefchaouen

Day two is all about Chefchaouen. This “holy city” sits nestled amidst a nature reserve, offering stunning mountain views. Take a free day to wander the maze-like alleys, discover hidden gems of local crafts, and chat with the friendly people. From panoramic viewpoints, capture breathtaking photos of the town bathed.

Day 3: Chefchaouen to Fes

On day three, we’ll embark on a journey back in time as we travel to Fes, an ancient imperial city dating back to the 8th century. It’s also one of the first holy cities of Islam in Morocco and boasts one of the oldest universities in the world! Take the afternoon to relax and explore at your own pace, getting a first glimpse of this captivating city that will transport you to a bygone era.

Day 4: Full day to explore Fes

Day four dives deeper into Fes with a guided tour led by a local expert. You step into the labyrinthine medina (old town). Time seems to stand still here. Witness the traditional guild system where artisans continue to practice their crafts and navigate the narrow streets bustling with activity. You might even spot a donkey carrying goods amidst the people! Explore hidden neighborhoods, marvel at magnificent mosques, and soak up the city’s rich spiritual heritage. Day 5: Fes to Meknes

Day five brings a change of scenery. We’ll head west to explore Volubilis, the most important archaeological site in Morocco. You’ll have free time to wander the site or join a local guide to learn about these impressive remains.

Next, we’ll pay our respects at Moulay Idris, a significant pilgrimage center. This small town boasts a bustling medina that can be explored in under an hour. Finally, we’ll arrive in Meknes, the “humble” among Morocco’s four imperial cities. We’ll have a chance to marvel at the majestic Royal Palace, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, the imposing Hassan Tower, and the Kasbah of the Udayas. In the afternoon, we’ll continue to the charming coastal town of Asilah. This delightful town boasts a beautiful white medina, perfect for a relaxing stroll and soaking up the seaside atmosphere.

Chefchaouen:

Chefchaouen, also known as the “Blue Pearl,” is a magical town nestled in the Rif Mountains of Morocco. Its most striking feature is the abundance of blue paint used on buildings throughout the medina (old town). The vibrant blue walls wash over the houses in calming shades of indigo, cobalt, and cerulean, creating a visual feast.

While the exact reason behind the blue walls remains a mystery, some believe it reflects the color of the sky and the sea, symbolizing peace and tranquility. Others say it was a tradition started by Jewish refugees who arrived in the 1930s.

Meknes is one of the four imperial cities of Morocco, along with Fes, Marrakech, and Rabat. Nicknamed the “Versailles of Morocco,” it was once a bustling center of wealth and power. We finally reached Merzouga after a long journey! There, we met our guides who would be leading us through the desert adventure.

Around 5:00 pm, we set off on our camel trek through the vast desert landscape. The sunset was absolutely incredible as we rode along. After about an hour and a half, we arrived at the desert camp.

By the time we settled into our tents (hamas) and dropped our stuff, it was already dark. Dinner was next, and it was delicious! But the real highlight came after dinner – entertainment time! Our guides put on a concert for us, and then they even taught us how to play the drums ourselves!

Finally, the most magical moment of the whole trip arrived: gazing up at the spectacular night sky, filled with countless twinkling stars.

This whole experience with the fantastic guides was unforgettable. We’re definitely doing this again someday!

I arrived in Merzouga in the afternoon to begin the tour through the Sahara with my sister. From the start, the staff were all very welcoming and kind. The Berber camel guides took us through an amazing landscape of the Sahara desert to where our campsite was located. We had some down time to take in the beautiful scenery, golden sands that stretched out for miles upon miles. We sat on top of the sand dunes as the staff prepared a wonderful dinner consisting of vegetable and chicken tagine-a traditional Moroccan dish. After dinner, our Berber hosts invited us to sit around the fire while they drummed traditional Moroccan music under the stars. This was one of my favorite parts of the experience because everyone joined in laughing and dancing amongst the beautiful music.
